As the temperature outside rises, nothing can compete with a day spent lounging by the pool. But public pools can be overcrowded and filthy, a pool all to myself is more my style. Of course, a lot of responsibility comes with a pool. It is very important to keep your pool clean and free of gunk. Which is why I have compiled a list of the top pool cleaners on the market.
The benefits of buying a pool cleaner are seemingly endless, some of them are pretty obvious, and others are more subtle. The first benefit of buying a pool cleaner is that your water will be clean. No one wants to swim in green and gunky water, which is exactly what the cleaner takes care of. Another benefit is that it makes your life much easier. Using a pool cleaner can greatly reduce the amount of time you spend doing maintenance. Using a pool cleaner can also help reduce the risk of some diseases.
There are three main types of pool cleaners to choose from, suction, handheld, and robotic. Suction cleaners are an inexpensive option that stick to the suction line of your pool’s plumbing system. Robotic cleaners are practically an all in one, automated cleaner. They have a self-contained filtration system and doesn’t add any additional burdens to your pool equipment. Handheld pool cleaners are almost like a vacuum for your pool and you use it similarly.
To help you choose the best pool vacuum for your needs, I have come up with a few tips and tricks to help you as you shop. First off, decide what kind of pool cleaner you want. I have only provided a very brief description of each one, it would be best for you to do some more research after you finish reading this. Next you will want to look around and compare prices so that you can get the best deal. Lastly, never settle. There is no need to settle for a pool cleaner that you don’t love. If it doesn’t have all the features you want, then keep looking until you find the right one.
Devours Debris: This suction pool cleaner will devour debris of almost any size. It goes along the ground and sides of your pool to make sure it is debris free.
Quiet: Instead of having a cleaner that sounds like a powerful generator, you can have one that makes practically no noise.
FlowKeeper Valve: The unique FlowKeeper valve automatically regulates water flow. This allows even low horsepower pumps to maintain peak performance at all times.
36 Fin Disc: The one of a kind 36 fin cleaning disc provides you with unrivaled suction and prevents your cleaner from getting caught up on drains and such.
One of my favorite things about this cleaner is that it only has one moving part. This eliminates the need for wheels and makes maintenance super easy and cheap. It also just seems way safer, in my opinion, than a cleaner with lots of moving parts to get stuff stuck in.
The only downside of this pump is that it does cause wear on your pool pump. This is pretty standard for suction cleaners however, and if you are not willing to wear out your pump a little bit, then a suction cleaner probably isn’t right for you.
No Tools: You do not need any tools or special skills to install this suction pool cleaner, it is very easy and can be done in just a few minutes. It took me about 15 minutes to set mine up and it was my very first time.
Superior Suction: It is hard to find a pool cleaner with better suction than the Kreepy Krauly. This superior suction allows the cleaner to get a thorough and complete clean for your entire pool.
Bag Free: The Kreepy Krauly uses a cartridge filter rather than a bag, which is easy to clean and replace. It is also much cleaner than using bags, which are prone to ripping and spilling.
Easy to Use: The Kreepy Krauly doesn’t have a thousand buttons or settings that are impossible to adjust. It is very easy to use and can be done by pretty much anybody.
One thing I love about this cleaner is how good of a job it does cleaning algae. I hate when algae starts to build up on the sides of my pool, but using this cleaner that is something I never have to worry about.
Unfortunately, I haven’t found this cleaner the best when it comes to picking up large debris, such as leaves. However, leaves are usually pretty easy to just skim off the surface, so this isn’t too much of a disadvantage.
Lightweight: Usually a really good robotic pool cleaner is pretty heavy. However, this one is surprisingly lightweight, which makes it easy to store and take care of.
Effective: This robotic cleaner from Dolphin is incredibly hardworking and effective. It can clean pools as long as 50 feet in just a few hours.
Warranty: With the Nautilus, you get a really great warranty agreement. It is a pretty comprehensive 12 month warranty, which is more than a lot of pool cleaners come with, it covers spare parts and labor. To me, this shows me that Dolphin is really committed to quality and customer satisfaction.
Cartridge Filter: No need for messy bags since the Nautilus has an easy to clean cartridge filter. This keeps maintenance to a minimum and makes your life much easier.
I love that this robotic cleaner is programmed to scan your pool and find the most effective path to take. You never have to worry about whether or not it missed a spot, because it will scan the pool, leaving no surface uncleaned.
The only downside of this cleaner is that it is on the pricier side.
Cyclonic Vacuum: The unique cyclonic technology of this cleaner allows the MX8 to get greater suction and a wider cleaner path. All this, means you get a deeper clean for your pool.
X-Trax Tires: The X-Trax tires make climbing walls and navigating around tight corners a breeze. They maximize maneuverability so that the MX8 can get every inch of your pool.
Non Damaging: Since this cleaner is robotic and does not attach directly to your pool’s pump, it does not wear out your pump or damage any part of your pool.
Warranty: The Zodiac MX8 also comes with a 12 month warranty, so it is almost risk-free to purchase.
Not only is this cleaner great for in ground pools, it also is great for all pool surfaces. Whether your pool is vinyl, tile, fiberglass, or anything in between, the Zodiac MX8 can clean it all. This also means you can take your pool cleaner with you if you ever move without having to worry about whether it will work on a new pool.
My least favorite part of this cleaner is the maintenance that it requires. It is not a lot of work to take care of, but it is important that you take care of it. I haven’t found a cleaner that requires no maintenance, so this is something that is common among all pool cleaners and does not take away from its performance overall.
Bag Free: No bags, no worries. Although bags do have their advantages, cartridges will almost always be easier to clean and replace.
Hypergrip Continuous Grasp: The Dolphin hypergrip allows the cleaner to achieve maximum traction and keeps the back wheels from getting the newly clean area dirty again.
Dual Brushes: Its unique dual brushes allow the cleaner take on tough debris and algae without skipping a beat.
Scanner: The built-in scanner will scan the surfaces of your pool and find the best route to take. The scanner also ensures that every article of debris is removed and that your pool is squeaky clean.
A huge advantage, for me at least, is how freaking light it is. Somehow, it only weighs 14 pounds. This makes it incredibly easy to store and tote around when you are not using it. It does not cause user fatigue or anything.
You’re probably thinking, “well all that sounds great, but what’s the catch?” The only downside of this cleaner is its price. I have not been able to find it anywhere for below $500. I paid a little over $500 for mine and I don’t regret it at all, but I know this is outside of some peoples budget.
Lightweight: Weighing in at just 3 pounds, this handheld pool cleaner will not wear you out or make you feel like you just spent 2 hours at the gym.
Cord Free: It is also cord free, which is great news if you’re like me. I hate getting cords tangled, or getting tripped up on them while I’m cleaning, but that wasn’t even a concern of mine when I used this cleaner.
Rechargeable: Since there is no cord, it is battery powered. Thankfully though, the battery is rechargeable, so you don’t have to shill out hundreds of dollars a year on batteries.
Effective: The Pool Blaster is capable of picking up debris of all sizes. It can also clean 33 gallons of water per minute, without relying on the pools filtration system at all.
I know I’ve been bashing on bags, but I actually really like the bag that this one uses. It has a reusable filter bag, that is easy to empty, so you don’t have to continuously buy replacements.
When you buy this cleaner, it does not come with a telescope pole to help you reach far away places, like the very bottom of the pool. However, this can be purchased separately pretty inexpensively.
Storage Notch: The notch on the Pool Blaster Max is incredibly useful when you are not using it and trying to store it. Instead of just leaning it up against the shed, or cramming it in the closet, you can hang it wherever you have a free hook.
Telescopic Pole: This cleaner also comes with a telescopic pole, which will help you get hard to reach places, like corners and the very bottom.
Clip On Accessories: Clip on the included wheels if you have a concrete pool. Or, if you have a vinyl pool. You can clip on the included brushes. These clip on accessories are what makes this cleaner perfect for every type of pool.
Dent Proof: Perhaps best of all, this one-hand cleaner is also fade proof and dent proof. Meaning it will look as good as new for a very long time.
The Water Tech Pool Blaster Max comes with a one year warranty that will protect you from defective cleaners and ensures that you are not wasting your time and money.
The bags that this cleaner uses to store the captured debris just does not suit my taste. The cleaner itself still works great, I just loathe maintenance on this cleaner because I personally do not like bags.
You should make sure that the selected cleaner is suitable to your family needs. First, there are three types of above ground pool cleaners. Suction-side automatic pool cleaners connect to the existing system. The vacuum is moved by energy created by the pool pump. This type also connects to a skimmer. It is cheaper and easy to use. Pressure side cleaners are attached to the return system of the pools circulation. They have an inherent power plant. These cleaners help distribute filtered water around the pool. They also have their debris bags. Robotic pool cleaners are meant for both in-ground and above ground pools. They are self-contained and don’t require to be connected to the existing filtration system. They only need a power source. This cleaner saves time and cleans more effectively.
When choosing an above ground pool cleaner, make sure the maximum height of the hose is compatible with the depth of the pool. Contoured models are more preferred since they improve movement under water. It should not be too light so as to enhance stability in water. Automated models which are compatible with different pool pumps and filters are more convenient. A good cleaner should also accommodate accessories like a leaf canister. The price should also match performance aspects like easy installation, storage, and durability. You can also prefer to select unique colors and animated cleaners to motivate you during the cleaning exercise.
Automation: Intex Auto get rid of debris and dirt using pressure from water being pumped back into the pool. This pressure-side pool cleaner. It can be used with other cleaners apart from Intex pools with the provision of an adapter that fits the return line of the particular pool.
Attachment: This model uses 24.6 inches hose to link with the inlet connector.
Pump Range: It accommodates a wide range of filter pumps between 1600 to 3500 gallons per hour. A pump capable of at least 2500gph is usually enough. This model is also compatible with a sand filter pump.
Size: This cleaner has a height of 24 feet. Therefore, it’s able to clean pools with heights up to 24 feet. It works better at the height of 18 feet for rectangular pools. It weighs only 15.3 pounds which make it portable. This includes small wheels for mobility.
Brush and Pressure Jet: A brush is located at the base of the cleaner which helps clean the entire floor. Debris is removed through the action of the water pressure jet which blows away unwanted materials.
Filtration: debris net, skimmer basket, and pump filter. This model comes with a debris net, pump filter and a skimmer net which trap debris and floating sand.
It is offered at a reasonable price. The light construction makes it portable. It cleans a wide range of unwanted materials including debris and sand. Full automation results to seamless and comfortable use. The design makes cleaning and maintenance much easier.
It is designed only for in-ground and Intex pools. However, it can be used with other pools with the provision of an adapter. Best performance is obtained on smooth surfaces and pools with reduced turbulence.
Design: Hayward 900 is meant for all types and sizes of above ground pools. This automated model works well with the existing filtration system. It is designed with attractive 4-color cartoons. A contoured design allows the model to move through the water more easily for a faster cleaning process.
Gearing System: This system helps improve water circulation by drawing moving water from the bottom of the pool which produces better cleaning results. It ensures constant balanced water for a gentle movement and quiet operation.
Bumper Ring: the Deluxe bumper ring is incorporated to help minimize friction for easy movement along the walls and continuity of the programmed steering pattern.
Pump and Piping: It comes with a 30 feet horse and accommodates all pumps less than 3/4 horsepower.
Smart/Automation: A SmartDrive programmed steering is used to make sure that all spots are cleaned.
Installation and Warranty: The installation takes less than ten minutes, without tools. This model comes with a 1-year warranty from the manufacturer.
This model is easy to install and performs well for different pool sizes and shapes. It works great with a sand filter or any existing filtration system. It is easy to use and does not need a skimmer. A 1-year warranty shows manufacturers confidence for the product.
Requires full disassembly for storage. It hard to keep the tale on and has a tendency to tip over the current. Otherwise, it provides a great overall performance.
Connection: This unit is easily connected to a skimmer and a dedicated vacuum port. Power is obtained from the swimming pool pump. The provided 32 feet horse is enough to clean a 24 feet round pool.
Automated Smart Drive System: This model also uses a programmed steering system which cleans the bottom of the pool more effectively.
Design: It is also contoured to promote steering while under water for fast cleaning. A bumper ring is incorporated to improve movement.
Circulation and Filtration: Aquabug is a suction-side automated pool cleaner. Improved water circulation is attributed to the suction mechanism from the bottom of the pool. Water flows through the pool pump filter then back into the swimming pool. Filtration is initiated by the pool filter and pump strainer.
It can be used to clean an above ground pool with a salt chlorine generator to initiate the production of natural chlorine. The installation is straightforward and requires no tools. It moves easily and faster while below water. A leaf canister can be added to help trap leaves.
A strong current can make it tip over or go sideways. It is designed for only permanent above ground pools but with great efficiency.
Out of all the different types of pool cleaners, robotic pool cleaners are my personal favorite. They are the easiest to use and they make your life way easier by keeping your pool clean, so that you don’t have to. Below are some of the best robotic pool cleaners on the market, for your consideration.
Lightweight: It may sound like a lot, but 35 pounds is pretty light for a robotic pool cleaner. This makes it super easy to use and maintain.
Easy to Use: With the cleaner self programmed to scan your pool, there is pretty much nothing you have to do except clean it occasionally. You have to plug it in, of course, but that’s a given.
Fast Cleaning: The Dolphin Nautilus can scrub, vacuum, and filter all of your pool’s surfaces in just three hours. It is a total miracle worker and gets your pool water crystal clear.
Swivel Cable: The swivel cable prevents tangling and allows the robot to turn in any direction without getting stuck on the cord. As you can imagine, it would be a huge pain in the neck to have to watch the cleaner and make sure it didn’t get tangled up.
Two huge advantages of this cleaner are its 12 month warranty and easy to clean cartridge filter. The cartridge filter makes it so you don’t have to deal with messy bags and is easy to access.
The only slightly negative thing is that the robot pauses a lot while cleaning. This is just to scan the pool to see where to clean, it still gets your pool impeccably clean.
Aquabot Pump: The unique Aquabot Pump in the S2-40i filters over 80 gallons of water per minute. This means that it has unbeatable suction and will stay tight against the walls of your pool.
Heavy Duty Filtration: Incredibly, it can filter out any media, as small as 2 microns, giving you crystal clear waters.
Sleek: The sleek design allows the S2-40i to easily maneuver around your pool and get tight corners.
Safe: After being put through rigorous testing for safety and performance, you can be sure your S2-40i is safe to use.
This cleaner works great on all pool materials. Whether it be a vinyl surface or fiberglass surface, this cleaner is safe for use on all of them. It is also a very affordable robotic cleaner if you are on a budget or don’t see the point in spending thousands of dollars on a cleaner.
The only downside is that the warranty is only good for a year. This is definitely still good, I think everyone likes lifetime warranties better though.
High Capacity: The high capacity filter makes maintenance an occasional thing. It also makes maintenance very basic and easy to do.
Heavy Duty Filtration: The extremely reliable filtration filters out debris of every size, keeping your waters clear.
Weekly Timer: You can easily program the cleaner to clean at certain intervals throughout the week. This is incredibly handy for forgetful people, like myself. I can just set it and forget about it.
Full Pool Scanning: To maximize the cleaning, the Nautilus Plus automatically scans your entire pool and learns the shape and dimensions of it so it can clean in the most efficient pattern.
This cleaner can clean in ground pools that are up to 50 feet long in less than 3 hours. I have never had a faster and more efficient pool cleaner. It also comes with a great 2 year warranty.
The only drawback of this cleaner is that it is a little pricy, it is worth every penny, but if you look around you can probably find it on sale.
High Capacity: This pool cleaner has a super high capacity filter bag. It can go several cleanings between bag changes, which means the less you have to do.
Quick Drain System: The quick drain system is what makes it so you dot feel like you are lifting a ton of bricks when you are taking the cleaner out of the pool. It filters and drains the water super fast so that removal is a breeze.
Direct Drive Motor: This maximizes traction and helps to give your pool a thorough cleaning.
Intelligent Navigation: The included intelligent navigation allows the cleaner to turn on its own without the need for a wall.
Another great thing about this cleaner is that it comes with a one year warranty agreement.
Unfortunately, this cleaner does use bags, which are usually pretty messy. However, they are super easy to change for this filter, so I don’t really mind.
Aqua Trax Tires: The unique Aqua Trax tires on the Polaris F9550 allows for greater traction on all pool surfaces.
Vortex Vacuum Technology: Sounds weird, I know, but it is exactly what it sounds like. Like a huge vortex that sucks everything into it. The vortex vacuum technology allows the F9550 to pick up large and small debris, never losing suction.
Programmable Timer: I love the programmable timer of this one. You can set what days and time you want it to clean and you can pick from a variety of preprogrammed patterns.
Easy to Clean:
This amazing pool cleaner is perfect for in ground pools and is almost unrivaled in quality.
Unfortunately, this one is by far the most expensive one on our list. However, it is also the most high end and probably the best one.
